2nd Sunday Advent – Merry Christmas? Happy Advent?
Since the run-up to Black Friday sales, we’ve been in the Christmas Sales Season. Here, we say Merry Christmas to demonstrate our allegiance to the really lovely yet perverted myth of Santa Claus, his elves, Mrs. Claus, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
Christmas Lights! Charlie Brown’s Christmas! Miracle on whatever street. Bing Crosby dreaming of a White Christmas. Jingle Bell Rock. And allegiance to the sales season. Merry Christmas!
It lasts until the sales are over.
Advent ends at sundown on December 24th.
Advent speaks to another part of our lives – poverty we avoid, emptiness we disdain, fear of rejection we reject. Yet, this is where Jesus is born every day.
No wonder I don’t want to go there. You?
Here is my homily from the 7:30 am Mass about all this. Happy Advent! –roc,sj
