“Remember, you are dust…” [9]

To Prepare for 3rd Sunday of Lent… First Scrutiny

Samaritan Woman

A number of parishes will celebrate the First Scrutiny Sunday.  Here you will find the Scrutiny defined:

The Scrutinies… are rites for self-searching & repentance and have above all a spiritual purpose:

  • The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect;
  • To bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. [RCIA, p. 78, #141]

John 4, Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman, describes the fundamental discernment of discipleship: Do I keep drawing water from the cistern, from the pit? Do I seek living water from Christ?

It’s so dang difficult to get a perspective on my life – what are my motives? what drives me? I don’t go to the cistern for water, do I? I really want to receive living water from Christ… don’t I?
