Roc Homily – Feast of Christ the King 2016 (3)
Luke 23:39 One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
The way I hear this is: “Take it away! I don’t deserve this! Save me from the consequences of my actions! Help me escape unscathed and unchanged!”
And what I find difficult to hear is: Luke 9:24 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it.
Seems to me that the only one who looked at himself and his situation clearly said, “And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong… Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He’s the only one who asked rather than mock or railed at Jesus. (Luke 23:41f)
