Ash Wednesday Homily

Philippines Ash WednesdayHow long do your Lenten resolutions hold?  Three weeks?  Two?  One?  All the way until Holy Thursday?  Yeah, me too.  What

So, why fast?  Why give alms?  Why pray in hiddenness?

We fast to notice what drives us to give up on fasting.  We fast to come to claim whatever urges us to break our fast.  We fast to see how long we can live on self-will.  We fast to fail.

We give alms to explore the intricacies of our emptiness that fuels greed or withholding.

We pray to discover how self-absorbed we are.  We give up praying when we don’t experience reward.  It’s painful to sit with naked longing for God.
