Roc preaching:Bac 2008_2

This first temptation is lodged against Jesus’ humanity, actually. The tempter says, “Make this stone be bread.”  This is the most basic human temptation – make X be Y. Or, treat a stone as if it were bread. Pretend this one thing, good in itself, can actually nourish. And we all know what happens when you eat gravel, right? Orthodontist time!

Reflect, if you will, whether this is your temptation. And wonder how Jesus could respect the difference between two goods. Please. –roc,sj

Luke 4:1-13     Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil.  He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry.  The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, One does not live on bread alone.
