“Remember, you are dust…” [10]
Homily for the 3rd Sunday of Lent (and First Scrutiny)
Once again, here’s what the Scrutinies attempt to do…
The Scrutinies… are rites for self-searching & repentance and have above all a spiritual purpose:
- The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect;
- To bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. [RCIA, p. 78, #141]
Following the homily, here is the prayer I prayed for our member of the Elect. Wouldn’t it be cool to hear something like this prayed over your life & mine?
Lord Jesus,
you are the fountain for which [D] thirsts,
you are the Master & Teacher whom he seeks.
In your presence
he recognizes his struggles & failings,
for you alone are the Holy One of God.
He opens his heart to you in faith,
confessing his waywardness
and laying bare his hidden wounds.
In your love, free him from his burdens,
heal whatever afflicts him,
quench his thirst, and give him peace.
In the power of your name,
which we call upon in faith,
stand by him now and heal him.
Free him from any spirit of evil,
conquered by your rising from the dead.
Show your Elect the way of salvation in the Holy Spirit,
that he may come to worship the Father in truth,
for you live and reign forever and ever. [Amen.]
