5th SUN LENT – 2nd Homily (audio)

Lazarus 3

“One must die so we do not perish…”  Ca’aiphas did not say, “so we live” – he wanted to maintain his life in opposition to Jesus.

Hard to say, but isn’t this our plight?  Fearing to live fully, we protect ourselves from threats to our sovereignty & security.

Sad to say, don’t we get defensively aggressive against threats to our sovereignty?  Hurt people hurt people.  Why do I put the Body of Christ on the cross?  Why do I put those closest to me on the cross?  Why do I make others pay the price for my inability to see, admit, and deal with what fuels my defensive-aggressiveness?

Good news.  As we see this difficult stuff, we can also learn to see the remedy, as stated in Preface III for Sundays.

You came to the aid of mortal beings with your divinity and even fashioned for us a remedy out of mortality itself…

That the cause of our downfall might become the means of our salvation through Christ our Lord!

That is GOOD NEWS! –roc,sj
