A04-Studying “In the Midst of Our Storms” – Chapter One.three
Welcome to a series of video presentations about my book, “In the Midst of Our Storms: Opening Ourselves to Christ in the Liturgy.”

When I first heard the term, “paschal mystery,” I was put off by it and annoyed – “What the deuce does that mean!” I guess I next thought of it as a “thing,” albeit a sacred thing. Reading the personalist philosophy of John Macmurray (1891-1976) with Fr. Peter Fink, SJ at (the former) Weston Jesuit School of Theology (1992) opened my mind to the realm of the personal. What if liturgy is about personal encounter?
Bob Taft’s essay that I have quoted, “What Does Liturgy Do,” pried the door open a bit more: “We celebrate not a past event, but a present person…” Hence, my first point in chapter one – The paschal mystery is a person, not a thing.
