A05-Studying “In the Midst of Our Storms” – Chapter One.four
I grew up as a Catholic concentrating on one key element for salvation – Jesus’ death on the cross. What I understand now is that this focus is necessary, by all means (!), but not sufficient.
In gratitude for what I have learned from Bob Taft, SJ, I propose that we encounter the Risen Christ at liturgy. Since Christ is risen, all that has been, is, and will be true about him is present now in his person. That is, the paschal mystery refers to the Christ who was incarnate by the Spirit and born of the Virgin, was born, grew, went off to teach, preach, and heal, who gathered a band of disciples, who was arrested, unjustly judged, who suffered, died on the cross, was buried, who rose on the third day, ascended to the Father, sent the Holy Spirit, who intercedes for us still at the right hand of the Power, and who will come again in glory. Whew! This is the dynamic Christ, the paschal mystery, whom we encounter at liturgy.
